Minecraft can run on modest hardware, but Java Edition, large modpacks, shaders, high-resolution texture packs, multiplayer servers, and background applications can turn it into a much more demanding workload.
Minecraft requirements changed in 2026
Mojang’s July 2026 Java Edition guidance targets 1080p at 30 FPS on the Fast preset for the minimum specification: a 64-bit system, 8GB of RAM with a discrete GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics, a four-core processor, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM. The recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on the Fancy preset with 16GB of RAM, a stronger modern processor, and a more capable graphics card with 6GB of VRAM.

Java, Bedrock, mods, or shaders?
Bedrock Edition
Generally the simpler path for standard Minecraft play on Windows. It is also the edition used for cross-platform play with supported console and mobile players.
Java Edition
Popular for community servers, mods, and deeper customization. CPU performance, memory allocation, and the specific modpack can matter as much as the base game.
Shaders and ray tracing
Visual packs increase the graphics workload dramatically. Choose a stronger dedicated GPU when enhanced lighting, high-resolution textures, or ray-traced visuals are a priority.

Do not choose a Minecraft PC from the game name alone. Ask whether the player uses Java or Bedrock, which shader or modpack they plan to run, the target resolution, and whether they also play more demanding games.
